Sample curriculum

Advanced JavaScript

Strengthen your understanding of the language to debug confidently and write maintainable application code.

  • Intermediate
  • Live online and in person

At a glance

Who it’s for

Developers who already use JavaScript and want to reason more confidently about application code.

Starting point: Intermediate

Bring these foundations

  • JavaScript functions, arrays, objects, and basic DOM events.
Foundation sessions can be included when needed.

Technologies & tools

  • JavaScript
  • Browser DevTools
  • Node.js
Setup and versions agreed for your environment.

A practical destination

Skills to practise.

The sample path works towards these capabilities. Final goals reflect your team’s starting point and agreed scope.

  1. 01

Reason about scope, references and asynchronous execution when debugging.

  2. 02

Transform application data with small, reusable functions.

  3. 03

Organise asynchronous features into modules with explicit error handling.

Sample curriculum

Follow the learning route.

Each module connects the concepts to practical work. Open a module to explore both.

01Module 1

Language mechanics

Concepts to understand

  • Scope, closures, and execution context
  • Objects, prototypes, and this
  • Destructuring, spread, and module boundaries

Practical work

Predict and then inspect the output of examples involving closures, object references and this. Explain the difference between your prediction and the result.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
02Module 2

Working with data

Concepts to understand

  • Array transformations and higher-order functions
  • Immutability and reference behavior
  • Composition and reusable utility functions

Practical work

Transform a nested API response into a filtered, grouped view without mutating the source. Compare two approaches for clarity.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
03Module 3

Asynchronous JavaScript

Concepts to understand

  • Event loop and task scheduling
  • Promises, async/await, and error handling
  • Concurrent requests and cancellation

Practical work

Build an API client that starts concurrent requests and cancels an outdated request. Test success, failure and cancellation paths.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
04Module 4

Application patterns

Concepts to understand

  • Events and browser APIs
  • Debugging and memory management
  • Testing and refactoring modules

Practical work

Refactor the client into modules and add tests for the data transformations. Use the debugger to investigate a deliberately introduced fault.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.

A sample project

Bring the skills together.

Build a modular API client with cancellation, error recovery, and tests for its data transformations.

Shorter engagements can focus on selected exercises. A larger, learner-owned capstone can be scoped for a longer programme.

Review the work & reasoning

Four useful questions.

  1. 01

Does the work meet the agreed requirements?

  2. 02

Can the learner explain the key decisions and trade-offs?

  3. 03

What happens with invalid input, failure or an unexpected condition?

  4. 04

What would they change or explore next?
