Sample curriculum

Docker

Package applications consistently and build repeatable local and deployment environments.

  • Foundation to intermediate
  • Live online and in person

At a glance

Who it’s for

Freshers or teams building a foundation in this technology, with the starting knowledge listed here.

Starting point: Foundation to intermediate

Bring these foundations

  • Command-line basics and familiarity with an application runtime.
Foundation sessions can be included when needed.

Technologies & tools

  • Docker
  • Docker Compose
  • Container registry
  • Linux
Setup and versions agreed for your environment.

A practical destination

Skills to practise.

The sample path works towards these capabilities. Final goals reflect your team’s starting point and agreed scope.

  1. 01

Explain images, containers and their lifecycle.

  2. 02

Package an application with purposeful build choices.

  3. 03

Connect and troubleshoot a multi-service environment.

Sample curriculum

Follow the learning route.

Each module connects the concepts to practical work. Open a module to explore both.

01Module 1

Container foundations

Concepts to understand

  • Images, containers, and registries
  • Container lifecycle and CLI commands
  • Ports, environment variables, and logs

Practical work

Run a container, inspect its process and filesystem, and compare its state with the image it came from.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
02Module 2

Building images

Concepts to understand

  • Dockerfiles and build context
  • Layers, caching, and multi-stage builds
  • Image size and safer runtime configuration

Practical work

Write a Dockerfile for a sample application. Explain layers, dependencies and which files should remain outside the image.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
03Module 3

Multi-service applications

Concepts to understand

  • Networking and service discovery
  • Volumes and persistent data
  • Compose and environment configuration

Practical work

Connect an application and database with Compose, networks and volumes. Demonstrate how data survives a container replacement.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
04Module 4

Delivery & troubleshooting

Concepts to understand

  • Health checks and debugging
  • Publishing images and CI integration
  • Deployment and resource cleanup

Practical work

Troubleshoot a failed container using logs and inspection, then review configuration and the image-delivery workflow.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.

A sample project

Bring the skills together.

Containerize a web service and database with a Compose environment, health checks, and a documented runbook.

Shorter engagements can focus on selected exercises. A larger, learner-owned capstone can be scoped for a longer programme.

Review the work & reasoning

Four useful questions.

  1. 01

Does the work meet the agreed requirements?

  2. 02

Can the learner explain the key decisions and trade-offs?

  3. 03

What happens with invalid input, failure or an unexpected condition?

  4. 04

What would they change or explore next?
