Sample curriculum

Java fundamentals & JDBC

Build a solid Java foundation, then connect application logic to relational databases through JDBC.

  • Foundation
  • Live online and in person

At a glance

Who it’s for

Freshers or teams building a foundation in this technology, with the starting knowledge listed here.

Starting point: Foundation

Bring these foundations

  • Basic programming logic; prior Java experience is not required.
Foundation sessions can be included when needed.

Technologies & tools

  • Java
  • JDK
  • JDBC
  • SQL
  • IDE
Setup and versions agreed for your environment.

A practical destination

Skills to practise.

The sample path works towards these capabilities. Final goals reflect your team’s starting point and agreed scope.

  1. 01

Write and debug Java programs using clear data and control flow.

  2. 02

Model responsibilities with classes and interfaces.

  3. 03

Connect collection processing to relational persistence with JDBC.

Sample curriculum

Follow the learning route.

Each module connects the concepts to practical work. Open a module to explore both.

01Module 1

Java foundations

Concepts to understand

  • JDK setup, compilation, and execution
  • Types, control flow, and methods
  • Arrays, strings, and debugging

Practical work

Build a small command-line programme using types, branching and loops. Explain how an exception changes the flow.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
02Module 2

Object-oriented design

Concepts to understand

  • Classes, constructors, and encapsulation
  • Inheritance, interfaces, and polymorphism
  • Exceptions and resource management

Practical work

Model a business operation with classes and interfaces. Compare a design that separates responsibilities with one that mixes them.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
03Module 3

Collections & reusable code

Concepts to understand

  • Lists, sets, and maps
  • Generics and iteration
  • Lambdas and stream operations

Practical work

Process records with collections and reusable methods. Choose a collection based on lookup, ordering and duplication needs.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.
04Module 4

JDBC & persistence

Concepts to understand

  • Connections and prepared statements
  • CRUD operations and result sets
  • Transactions and safe resource cleanup

Practical work

Persist and query records with JDBC using parameterised statements. Show transaction and error behaviour with a failed operation.

Show the result. Explain one decision. Identify what you would improve.

A sample project

Bring the skills together.

Build a Java application with collections, input validation, JDBC persistence, and transaction handling.

Shorter engagements can focus on selected exercises. A larger, learner-owned capstone can be scoped for a longer programme.

Review the work & reasoning

Four useful questions.

  1. 01

Does the work meet the agreed requirements?

  2. 02

Can the learner explain the key decisions and trade-offs?

  3. 03

What happens with invalid input, failure or an unexpected condition?

  4. 04

What would they change or explore next?
